Nana Mercedes was an Ortega. Her grandparents on her father’s side were Francisco Ortega I and Francisca Najera. Nana’s father was Francisco N. Ortega II (pictured above), and her mother was Trinidad Gutierrez. Francisco and Trinidad were from the city of Tlaxcala* in central Mexico. At the time of Nana’s birth in 1883 the family had moved to Chihauhua, Chihuahua, in northern Mexico. Later they moved again to Guaymas, Sonora, where their second child Francisco III was born. *Note: Carmen Ortega’s certificate of death in 1948, reports that her father was Francisco Ortega of Mexico City, Mexico; and her mother was Trinidad Gutierrez of Monterey, Mexico. The certificate states that the person giving the information was Florencio O. Acuna of Bisbee, her nephew.
It is likely that Francisco was born in Mexico City and Trinidad in Monterey. They may have met and married in Tlaxcala or moved to Tlaxcala from nearby Mexico City. The couple subsequently moved to Chihuahua where their first child was born.
